Birthplace of a Nation Scholarship
Scholarship Sponsored by Leiva Law Firm
Introduction
At The Leiva Law Firm we honor Virginia’s long-standing place in American history while investing in future leaders. Known as “The Birthplace of a Nation,” Virginia’s role in shaping the country’s founding principles inspires our new scholarship: The Birthplace Of A Nation Scholarship. This $1,000 award invites students to consider how the nation’s earliest ideals have transformed and to offer ideas for the nation’s future direction.
Scholarship focus
We are especially eager to hear from first-generation Americans whose parents immigrated to the United States; their perspectives add a distinct and meaningful viewpoint on the American story. Applicants should submit a thoughtful 750–1,000 word essay that examines how the United States has developed from the original vision of its early settlers and describes how it might continue to evolve — socially, politically, or culturally — based on those founding principles.
Our firm was founded on the principles of justice, service, and community, and this scholarship is another way we give back by encouraging students nationwide to engage with history and contribute to ongoing conversations about America’s future.

Application requirements
- A 750–1,000 word original essay responding to the prompt: Virginia is called “The Birthplace of a Nation” for its key role in early American history. Considering that legacy, how has the United States grown from the original vision of its early settlers? Discuss how those foundational ideals have changed over time, and explain how you believe the nation will continue to develop socially, politically, or culturally in light of that vision.
- A professional résumé outlining academic and professional experience.
- An official transcript from your current school. First-year college students, graduate students, or recent transfers may submit an unofficial current transcript plus the most recent official transcript from their previous institution. High school applicants may submit proof of acceptance to their college or university in lieu of a college transcript.
- All essays will be screened for AI-generated content. Entries found to include AI writing will be disqualified.
Selection notes
- Preference will be given to applicants who are from or attending secondary school in Virginia.
- The essay should present original, well-reasoned analysis and connect historical foundations to future possibilities.
If you meet the above criteria and wish to apply, prepare your essay, résumé, and transcript documentation as described. Good luck — we look forward to reading your perspective on America’s past and future.
